The World Surf League has officially announced that Rodrigo Koxa, a 38 year old Brazilian surfer, has set the new World Record for the largest wave ever ridden at 80 feet in Nazaré, Portugal.
“I try to surf big waves all my life, and I had a huge experience in 2014 where I almost died at Nazaré,” Koxa said. “Four months later, I had bad dreams, I didn’t travel, I got scared, and my wife helped me psychologically. Now, I’m just so happy, and this is the best day of my life. Thank you to WSL, it’s a dream come true.” Rodrigo Koxa, from surfertoday.com
Not surprisingly, this surfer had assistance to get into the monstrous wave with a jet ski because of the screamin’ speed of the wave. Doesn’t make it any easier to have a jet ski , by any means. You still gotta surf the wave 80 feet down. Eight stories. A Miami condo.
To live through a drop like this, no doubt Big Wave surfers have to go though a lot of unseen, unsexy failure and recovery, over and over, to make it to this point.
Don’t tell this guy he got “lucky to make it.”
